  你喜欢先看电影再看书还是反过来(根据书改编的电影)

Many filmmakers make movies based on books. Some people prefer to read the book before they watch the movie, while other people prefer to watch the movie before they read the book. Which one do you prefer?

Watching movies and reading books are two typical pastimes for people nowadays, and the booming up of movies adapted from particular books generates a widespread discussion: should people read the book before watching the film or vice versa? While some insist that reading books first is a better choice, I prefer to watch movies first and refer back to the texts later, as I think it saves my time and benefits my understanding towards the story.

First, I would like to watch the movie before reading the book, because reading a novel costs more time than watching its adaptation in the cinema. As we all know, people are overwhelmed by their work in this era, so it is hard for them to keep reading every day after work. Since a book always consists of hundreds of pages, and some are even more than that, it is common that one finishes reading a single book in one or two months, or just ends up with putting it aside. What is worse, the tiring reading experience may fail to trigger their interest in watching the movie adapted from the book. On the contrary, a movie that only lasts for two hours is more acceptable for people who want to seek entertainment after work. Without spending much time, people can be informed about the main characters and plots effectively. Those who want to delve deeper into the book can just read the excerpts of certain chapters according to their preference instead of the whole book, which is more efficient than the previous situation.

Moreover, movies offer us the visual aid we need when reading books. Books with exotic elements are more likely to be placed at the shelves of best sellers, which is understandable as the nature of human is being curious about things we do not know. However, if they directly read the description or narration that are loosely related to their experience, they may be discouraged or lack the chance to explore the books further. To solve the problem, movies construct a vivid platform for people to integrate themselves into the fictional world, allowing the audience to share the feelings with the characters and better understand the words written in the books. To be more specific, we can never expect a young adult who lives in Asia all his life to understand the description of Georgia’s plantations in Gone with the Wind only by reading, but we can imagine that he gains more concrete understanding towards it after watching the movie, with the mansions and oak trees between the lines presenting on the screen. Hence, being able to avoid the confusion caused by reading blindly, watching movies in advance leads to a more comprehensive and enjoyable reading experience.

In a nutshell, I believe that watching a movie that provides us with multiple sensory stimuli in a short time beforehand is a better choice than reading the book first.
