Both the reading and the lecture are talking about the landing site on Mars. The author of the reading claims that the equator is better than the poles, while the lecturer challenges this perspective by providing three reasons.
The reading first points out that the poles are too cold whereas the temperature of the equator is more suitable, which will not damage the equipment. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that due to temperature fluctuations, expansion and contraction will easily cause cracking and so do harm to the equipment.
Secondly, the reading passage conceives that the equator is closer, so it will save more fuels when the probe returns to the Earth. The listening, by contrast, says that because Mars probe cannot bring fuels from the Earth, they need to be produced by water, which could be provided by the ice on the poles. The equator on the Mars, however, does not have water at all.
In the final analysis, the writer in the reading asserts that if the probes lands on the equator, with sufficient sunshine, it is easier to see the surface of the Mars. The professor in the lecture says that despite that, the tremendous radiation from the equator is detrimental to the equipment. If the probe lands on the poles, the ice could be used as walls to block the radiation, in which this problem could be solved.
