The opposing views made by the topic indicate two extremes about how the costs of health care should be afforded, but I would argue that the truth would always be somewhere in the middle. It may be too much to ask from the government to take full responsibility in financing this area, but it may also be unwise to let citizens pay for all their medical care.
It would be impractical to provide every citizen the chance of enjoying medical services for free because of the great difficulties that may emerge along the way. Unlike the daily consumptions, the costs of medicines and therapies are high, involving a great deal of money spent in researching and testing the effectiveness of a type of medical intervention to diseases, as well as experimenting and controlling the side effects that come along. That renders the high prices imposed on the users, who also haven't the same abundant choices as they could make in other commodity markets since mostly, a particular treatment is the only way to a specific illness. However, even if it is too harsh for the patients to purchase the medication or medical interventions themselves, to let the government fully assume the cost is also reckless. This requirement burdens severe financial pressures and precludes the government from balancing the money in other activities like, say, to invest in other more promising areas.

To afford the medical costs at citizens' own expense is somewhat rational, but we cannot ignore the unreasonableness emerging alongside the process. When assessing the problem, we should first take a good look at the health care system lying behind most societies. Currently, the most common solution to release the pressures on medical treatment is the introduction of the medical insurance system, in which consumers pay a reasonable amount of money at a regular interval. Thus the self-paying system of the medical services is, to some extent, affordable for a wide range of people since it never forces the patients to bear with the high prices when there is an emergency, but knowing that there are still people out there awaiting financial assistance in their basic needs, the insurance mechanism is still not perfect enough to cover all citizens in society. The government may have to play a role, paying at least a part of the bill for the people living in poverty.
In conclusion, it is the lack of evaluation of both the government's ability and the medical costs affordability of some particular residents that compels me to question the rationality of both opinions. I presume that the costs should be paid in a more balanced way.
