范文:Traveling has become one of the prevalent ways for modern people to unwind and broaden the horizon. When it comes to how to effectively and efficiently learn about a city, many measures have been proposed. As far as I am concerned, visiting historic sites deserves to be prioritized.

To begin with, visiting historic sites can provide me with a wealth of information about the city in a limited time. Historical sites, such as the Forbidden City in Beijing and the Statue of Liberty in New York, usually symbolize a city’s core values. For instance, wandering in the Forbidden City and immersing myself in the solemnity of the magnificent buildings with hundreds of years, I would easily realize the rich history embedded in the old city and suddenly understand why my classmates from Beijing are so proud of their hometown, and some of them are fascinated with various historical anecdotes. Besides, as a greedy traveler, I could join a city tour, which commonly includes several prestigious sites in one day. Thanks to the sophisticated logistics provided by the tour guides, it is not impossible for me to visit many places within a few days, allowing me to know the history, culture and natural landscape of city in short time.

However, the information obtained from going to markets or shops is limited. It is tempting to think that we can taste the local lives and gain deep and authentic information about a city by going to the market or shop. However, this is only one side of the story. The truth is: we can only gain limited information about the city. For instance, I was stunned by the huge provision and meager tuna price when going to the fish market in Negombo, a Sri Lanka city known for its tuna. However, getting up at five o’clock in the morning can only allow me to believe that it is the home of various kinds of fish. I could barely gain any information about its past and the characteristics of local citizens.

Also, to learn a city by eating at a restaurant or stay in cafes is inefficient. When I was young, I was fascinated with some movie plots which present a romantic encounter in café: one of the protagonists is sipping a cup of coffee, and then, suddenly, he is crushed by the charming eyes of a young lady who just walks in and sits in the opposite. However, the reality is: modern people are under suffocating pressure, making them barely have time to converse with strangers while rushing to appease their hunger. Thus, it takes us a lot of luck and time to wait for a friendly and free local citizen to share social etiquette and how the city evolves.

Considering the reasons mentioned above, I firmly believe that visiting historical sites is the most viable and effective way to learn about a city. (482字)
