范文:The government has limited resources, while there are a great many issues it has to fund. Some people claim that it is not necessary for the government to provide financial support to artists and this group of people is supposed to support themselves instead. In my opinion, however, it is the responsibility of the government to offer financial assistance to artists.
Through their creation and performance of the arts, some artists become larger-than-life inspirations to the public, so governments need to support these people as much as possible. It is universally acknowledged that many famous artists have a tremendous impact on the society with their art works. Without the financial support of the government, it would have been extremely difficult, or even impossible, for such influence to occur. Take a famous Chinese pianist, Fu Cong, as an example. Born in 1930s in China, he could not receive a decent education on music due to the warfare and sluggish economy in China back then. Fortunately, the Chinese government funded his study in the Soviet Union and Poland, during which he became a talented and mature player later. After the cultural revolution, he went back to his motherland and held numerous concerts which enjoyed a big popularity back then. Without the government’s funding, it is unlikely that an artist like him would have been able to influence the society to such a large extent.
Since the training of an artist is likely to be very costly, the government is obliged to shoulder the responsibility of supporting these people. As we all know, the education of artists is very special and it does not seem to fit the norm of any other kinds of mainstream education. A will-be artist not only has to attend schools to receive regular training of necessary techniques, but he or she also has to participate in workshops in order to learn about a new genre, or visit exhibitions abroad to expand his or her outlook. Therefore, subsidies to a group of artists might be intimidating for private sources of funding and the government is in the best position and has the biggest capacity and possibility to assist them in a sustainable way. Private sources of funding are likely to pursue short-term interest only while the government is capable of providing steady support in the long term.
It is true that some artists are so talented and they are able to achieve a big fame at a young age, which will bring them a great fortune to support their life. Nevertheless, these prodigies are so rare that they cannot constitute the majority of artists. Even one of the most well-known and gifted musicians in the history, Mozart, led a poverty-stricken life in his 30s and ended up dying while starving. As a result, if there is no financial support from the government, some artists might fail to make a living and find it hard to survive in this industry.
In conclusion, it is the government’s obligation to subsidize artists in order to enable them to make a living, finish the necessary training, and exert a considerable influence on the society.
