It is true that many countries are facing the problem of an ageing population and people have different views about this trend. In my opinion, while the rise in the number of older people may create problems, the positive contribution that the elderly can make to the community should not be neglected.

As the population grows older, several related problems can be anticipated. The main issue is that there will obviously be more people of retirement age who will be eligible to receive a pension, imposing a financial burden on governments in ageing countries. Meanwhile, the proportion of younger, working adults will be smaller, and governments will therefore receive less money in taxes in relation to the size of the population. In other words, an ageing population will mean a greater tax burden for working adults. Further pressures will include a rise in the demand for healthcare, and the fact that young adults will increasingly have to look after their elderly relatives.

Despite the issues mentioned above, I believe that the elderly can still play an important role in educating the younger generation. In industries where professional experience is highly valued, retired people can work as tutors or consultants, offering guidance and suggestions to young employees and helping to solve difficult problems. For example, during emergency surgery, doctors always consult with experienced seniors who can suggest the best surgical plan. Similarly, older people can also play a role as extramural instructors for school students who need to learn about the workplace. Besides, elderly people can help to take care of young children at home, which will ease the pressure of working adults.

In conclusion, although the increase in the number of old people would impose a burden on the government and individuals,  it seems to me that the elderly can play a useful role in society.
