Some people reckon that people who have tons of money are more successful while others argue that greater success depends on individuals’ contributions to the society. It looks to me that both views have their justifications but neither of them can illustrate the whole picture since there is no objective criterion to determine which group of people are more successful.

On the one hand, it can be justified that money is one of the major indicators of a person’s success. This is because if a person earns plenty of money, he or she must be an expert in their chosen professions, with extraordinary skills or abundant experience. Moreover, their capabilities to seize the hard-won opportunity to make enormous fortunes denote their vision, boldness and decision-making power. Warren Buffet, for instance, whose great foresight to invest in stock market initially stemmed from his thorough practice of Graham’s philosophy of value investing. Therefore, such industry leaders with these valuable qualities can certainly be considered successful.
On the other hand, opponents claim that greater success does not reside in money but in a person’s contributions to the whole community. It is definitely true that people who commit themselves to different facets of society are more likely to earn deep respect from others since they would positively influence other community members with their personal power. To be specific, teachers impart knowledge to the younger generations in class and nurture them to be reliable successors of a country. While scientists devote themselves to the fields such as medicine, biology and astronomy, which are of critical significance to the evolution of a nation and even the whole of mankind. Such people are not necessarily wealthy, but they can be crowned as successful individuals beyond doubt.
In conclusion, I hold that both arguments can be justified with reasonable grounds. However, it would be simple-minded to attempt to define which group of people are more successful since it is impossible to give a precise and standard definition of success.
