In an era of materialism and consumerism, people are bombarded with new and exciting products. People engage in these goods not only because they appeal to human senses but also because they are advertised as necessary and indispensable. While this trend is harmful to the lives of individuals, it could bring benefits to society.
Consumers purchase the products they do not need due to intensive advertisingby large companies with deep marketing budgets. Regular advertisements displayed on various media often influence people unconsciously into believing that the products being advertised are necessary. For instance, corporates like Hewlett Packard spend billions of dollars on advertisements every year to sell laptops and computers. Moreover, people tend to purchase products that appeal to their senses and desires. Companies create items which have superior finish and appearance to attract customers. For example, a recent research revealed that more than 50 percent mobile phone buyers preferred Apple’s iPhone not because of its functions but because of its appealing touch and shape.
词汇替换:products = goods = items; consumers = people = buyers; advertising = advertisements = being advertised.
Engaging in extreme consumerism has several negative impacts ranging from an increase in individual debt to lack of focus on more important things. A 2014 study in the United Kingdom revealed that many Britishers spend more on television and mobile phone services than on food and education. This has increased household debt and compromised nutrition and intellectual development of the citizens. However, such spending is the primary reason behind decades of healthy growth rates in various countries. As people purchase more goods and services, a country’s gross domestic product increases and so does the job rate.
词汇替换:individual debt = househol debt, people = citizens, products和services拓展为television, mobile phone, food, education.
In conclusion, increasing consumption of items that people do not need is due to strong marketing by various companies. This has resulted in lower savings and lesser expenditure on necessary things. Governments should not only make people aware of the adverse effects of such behaviour but also regulate the advertisement of products.
