The position of female in the contemporary society has become a contentious debate. One of the tendencies widely acknowledged is that some universities tend to offer equal headcount of boy and girl students in each subject.
Granted, this is a fairly admirable intention. Indeed, gender is no longer an obstacle in modern society for women to obtain as remarkable achievements as men can do in almost all fields. Thus, equal opportunities should be provided to girl students when recruiting university applicants. However, this doesn’t mean that exactly 50% of the students must be girls for every course, regardless of students’ real interest and ability.
In fact, it is quite challenging to enroll same number of two genders in each subject. As a result, demand for equal number of students actually means a different potential of enrollment. Ironically, this might involve inconsistent selection criteria for male and female students.
Moreover, what we cannot overlook is that the history of mankind development has well proved both genders show different level of interest in many subjects. Different physical conditions also mean that certain industries will be more suitable for one gender than the other. Take science and technology subjects as an example; they have always seen much more boy students than girl students. This is not because girl students are not given the chance to learn these subjects, but because they choose not to.
To conclude, it is difficult as well as unnecessary to require equal number of boy and girl students. The most crucial consideration should be students’ personal interest and ability. Of course, both genders should be treated fairly and be selected with the same standards.
