Agree:
Personally, I agree that it’s necessary to learn the major language in order to know the essence of a country. Firstly, if we have mastered the skills to speak a certain language, we would be able to communicate more easily. Hence, we can talk to or even make friends with the local citizens if we ever visit the country, which is a perfect way for us to get to know this country better. For example, these local friends would share their experience of living there and insights on their home country with us. They may even recommend places to visit and yummy food to try out in the country.
Also, amid the process of learning a new language, we would come across the origins and history this country. By learning a country’s past history of language production, we learn more about its culture substrate. For instance, if I want to know more about Japan, by learning how to write Japanese, I learnt about its characters’ past history with its neighboring counties. Hence, I have gained more knowledge about Japan.
Disagree:
Personally, I disagree that it’s necessary to learn the major language in order to know the essence of a country. To start off, with the advancement of 21st century technology, there are many available alternatives of speaking the country’s major language on our own. Many mobile applications have made it possible for us to get to know the information of one country very efficiently, such as google, baidu, youtube and so on. In fact, all the detailed information about a country is just one click or one tap away.
Moreover, a country’s culture is diverse and multidirectional. Not only language, food, custom traditions and artworks are also other aspects of a country that is worthy to get a taste of. Thus, if we learn about those other aspects, we can still get to know the other side of one country well. After all, language is not the only road for us to get to Rome.
