Malls are attracting a growing number of young shoppers by creating favorable perception of the mall in terms of convenience, variety, awareness of brands, aesthetics and hedonic factors. I personally agree that too much exposure to an enormous range of products and services in most categories, there are more negative impacts on both young people themselves and the society as a whole.

Admittedly, shopping is often regarded as a way to relieve negative feelings such as depression, anxiety, anger and so on, but little do people know that the relief is ephemeral and damages are likely to occur, especially in the case of young people. In fact, one obvious phenomenon nowadays is that people are losing the ability to live a life without materialistic joy. Worse still, if excessive time is spent in shopping malls, the younger generations who are prone to behave irrationally will fall into the trap of impulse shopping, which may well result in over spending and shopping for things that are not necessary. Unless they have got decent income or fantastic savings habits, those consumer goods will sit on their credit card for a long time.

Meanwhile, society is unavoidably sharing the risk of the youth spending too much time in shopping mall. As the youth is increasingly surrounded by various products and service there, their desires of material grow as well. Despite a temporary boost in the economy, in the long run financial problems including bankruptcy, debt and even theft will occur when young consumers find themselves in big debts and financial crises when they are unable to pay back and the economy and stability of society will suffer accordingly. For example, many young people turn unemployed when they are less motivated or unable to perform their duties as they are paying more attention to over consumption or substance abuse. Cases where young people have to steal from their boss or the company’s money to cover up their expense are no longer rare.

In conclusion, although it appears to be a harmless fun for young people to go to malls more frequently than before, it is evident that if they are not better equipped to quash down any emotions that try to convince the rational part of their brains, especially when they are not financially comfortable, both the individual and society will be negatively affected.
