Reading can be a luxury in the technology era. Indeed, reading provides us with ways to expand our knowledge on certain subjects, as well asimproves our professional level. Normally in schools, students can either choose their own readings based on their interests and personalities, or subject teachers can provide valuable suggestions on which books to read. I personally believe that choosing our own readings would be more important than finishing reading assignments from teachers for the following reasons.
First of all, reading our favorite books brings relaxation. Our book choices normally are based on our interests. Reading our favorite books tend to be an enjoyable experience. Therefore, it would be relaxing to embark on our reading journey when the books we chose fit our taste. For example, I am a crazy fan for science friction. If I can choose The Lord of the Rings or Three Bodies for my reading lists, it would be such a relaxing process once I start to read my favorite books everyday after school.
In addition, when we are in charge of our own reading lists, we will finish these voluntary assignments with high levels of motivation, quality and persistence. What normally happens with academic books is that we are pressured to read in order to finish these tasks. Thus, we are less willing to read, and more likely tofinish rashly or even give up at the end. However, if we are aware that these books can help us improve in our interested fields, we will be motivated to keep reading the book till we finish. Moreover, we will be ready to embrace and thus remember the information that we have read about, as we may need to use it one day in the future. Take my passion for music as an example. If I can choose to read about music composition books on my own instead of being assigned to read Shakespear’s essay collections, I will finish reading my music book persistently and with great quality as well.
Granted, assignments from teacher indeed can help us achieve better academic results. And it brings convenience since searching for highly rated books in our interested fields could be overwhelming. However, these benefits would dim in the long terms, as compared with the benefits of reading our own book lists. Since we can’t promise we will still encounter the mandatory subjects taught in schools, these academically related books chosen by the teachers would not help usconsolidate our passion in the future. If my Mathematics teacher assigned reading materials regarding statistics to help my further advancement in Maths, while I have zero intention to pursue Statistics as a future career, then reading such materials become both boring and useless in the long run. Also, pressured to read what teachers assign would interfere with developing our interest for reading in the long run.
In conclusion, the readings students do on our own would be more important than reading teachers’ assignments. Our own reading lists help us relax, and motivate us to finish reading with high quality and persistence. Even though teachers’ recommendations can help us improve academically and might save our time, it’s not as beneficial as reading our own books in the long run.
