At present, there are thousands of languages that exist whereby some are more popular than others. Determining whether less spoken languages ought to be saved through government investment is an area of huge concern that will be discussed.
From one perspective, language is an integral aspect of culture that requires preservation in order to be passed down from generation to generation. Once a language is extinct by not having any native speakers, it is nearly impossible for it to be resurrected. In order to protect minority culture and diversity, it is imperative to ensure that endangered languages are preserved and taught to future generations. Only in this way can cultural heritage be protected and the various methods that people express themselves be maintained.
From another point of view, it has been estimated that a third of the world’s languages have fewer than one thousand speakers and a language dies out every two weeks. In order to save these ailing languages, huge investments need to be made to map out entire languages and educate youngsters, which would utilise funds that could be used for other purposes such as education, healthcare and alleviating poverty. Due to globalisation, it is difficult to force people to learn less commonly-used languages, particularly when the majority of learners are attracted to speaking languages that are popular and widely spoken.
All in all, there is a reason that dying languages are endangered since few people are interested in maintaining its survival. As a result, it is inevitable for most languages to die out as the world globalises and people focus on speaking the most useful languages for their studies, work or leisure.
