It is quite common these days that many secondary school students are given more opportunities to participate in a great variety of optional activities on summer or winter vacations. While some claim that it is more beneficial for those young students to attend university-level lecture, I strongly believe that field trips, especially like visiting museums orhistorical sites can be more intriguing and illuminating.
First of all, such field trips can effectively help students release their stress. As is known to all, having been studying in schools for years, a large number of high school students are inflicted with constant stress in school, dealing with their piles of assignments on a daily basis, competing with their peers constantly, or preparing those annoying exams from time to time. They, suffering from suffocating schedules and feeling exhausted and drained, are much more eager to abandon monotonous daily grind in schools and are more ready to participate in those activities that are more interesting. Visiting museums or historical sites can be a flawless option for them. This can be well illustrated with my personal experience about visiting local museums in Beijing. Although seldom do we, being as busy as a bee, have sufficient spare time for such activities, last summer vacation, we, as secondary school students, were organized to go to Peking museum where we derived great joy and pleasure, seeing those time-honored objects, talking with new friends, or walking around the whole palace, all of which can be relaxing and refreshing.
In addition, paying visits to museums or historical sites can be educational experiences. By that I mean high school students, who only focus on their daily curriculum, can learn beyond textbooks. In schools, students often spend hours on a wide range of academic subjects, such as geography, history, math or language, which could only lay a foundation for their further study. However, visiting museums can be an eye-opening opportunity for them to have better understanding of what happened in the past, how ancestors lived, or even how our society has been evolving, thanks to explicit explanation and vivid illustration of those valuable historical objects shown in historical places. It is also noteworthy that students can learn such valuable information in person rather than in written textbooks.
However, some are in favor of university-level lectures for young students. They believe that high school students, knowing how university life is like or what university students normally study, are supposed to better prepare their academic study or research in universities. After participation in university-level learning, high students can be more motivated or hard-working in high schools or they can be more adaptable to life and study well in future university learning. All of these seem plausible or even flawless, but factually most students show little interest in or even hate such academic activities, which means even if they are required to join the university lectures, they can hardly focus on them. In this case, such academic activities can be meaningless and pointless.
In conclusion, while attending university lectures seems like a good option, I am fully convinced that for those teen students, they should be encouraged to visit museums or historical places to help them reduce their academic pressure and broaden their horizons.
