题目
In many countries, planners tend to arrange shops, schools, offices and homes in specific areas and separate them from each other Do you think the advantages of this policy outweigh its disadvantages?(20170729)
范文
Since the initiation of urbanisation, city planning has always been a problem for locals. Some experts claim that urban areas should be divided up for different functionalities. However, there is a downside to it.
Some city planners are obsessed with designating different areas for different purposes. This means that under such mode, schools, business districts office blocks and residential areas would all be separate from each other. They believe that in this way the city could run more efficiently and could be managed much easier as well. It seems that centralised city functions could bring convenience to the public. To take shopping for example, it has been found that shops and markets are gathered In a relatively small area, in which the local residents can virtually purchase any product or receive any servce they wish for.
Nevertheless, to enjoy such so-called convenience, a huge pnce must be paid. First, with the development of the society, the demand of social groups for various living purposes can change dramatically.
For instance, when the distribution of age groups changes, the number of students may change as well. Consequently, the premises and equipment for schools may be insufficient to accommodate new arrivals, or otherwise, left unoccupied. Furthermore for the popularity of e-commerce, the scale of retail shops is shrinking at an unprecedented rate. Therefore, business districts and shopping malls may close down, and the land will be left desolate and wasted.
In summary, in the process of city expansion and development, the city planning strategy mentioned in the topic seems to show a lack of flexibility and low efficiency. so I believe its drawbacks outweigh its benefits.
