It is true that many local stores have been replaced by large supermarkets in cities these days. In my view, this trend brings more benefits than drawbacks to local residents.
The boom in large supermarkets makes shopping more convenient for local consumers. Firstly, shoppers have easy access to a great variety of products in big box stores like Sam's Club and Costco. They can purchase food, clothes, cosmetics and electronic devices in the same building instead of searching for goods in separate stores around the town, which is rather time-consuming. Secondly, larger supermarkets often provide buyers with discounts and special deals since they can operate on smaller profit margins because of the volume of shoppers, whereas corner stores may always run out of goods and fail to provide satisfying prices.
Another advantage of the growth in large supermarkets is that they help to improve the lives of local people. Big chain supermarkets create more job opportunities for local residents, enabling them to work near home without having to spend a long time commuting. The owners of small shops that are forced to close down may also continue to work as managers in new malls. Meanwhile, the wages and benefits offered by these international companies can usually be better than smaller retailers. Additionally, these large corporates can contribute to tax revenue of local government, which can be used to improve infrastructures like community centers, stadiums and libraries. All these factors combine to explain the inevitable dominance of large chain supermarkets over local retailers.
In conclusion, I believe that the rise in the number of large supermarkets has more advantages for local people because they are more convenient and financially beneficial than local stores.
