Giving encouragement is a necessary practice in every education system. While rewarding top students can encourage them to study harder, I believe that the reward system should also focus on those students who make progress.

Some people argue that if teachers can use rewards to recognize the excellence of top students, it can encourage these students to study harder, so they can adapt to a highly competitive world.Students will realize that they cannot receive rewards unless they gain an upper hand over their peers.Scholarships are, for example, among the most common rewards which are given to those high-achieving students to improve their motivation. These well-motivated young people will acquire more knowledge at school and get more opportunities for career advancement in the future.
On the other hand, some teachers may prefer to reward students who have improved their academic performance successfully because they think that these students will have incentives to make faster progress.Even those low-achieving students have a sense of achievement since their effort has been valued.Small gifts such as stationery can be presented to those who have managed to improve higher grades in exams, thereby increasing their confidence. If they do not receive rewards, they will have a negative attitude towards education or even drop out of school.
In my view, students who show improvements deserve rewards, since they will study with enthusiasm and develop their skills and talents in the school system. Even though they fail to perform as well as those straight-A students, they will understand that exam grades are not necessarily the only predictor of their future success. Students who have musical talents may be recognized by their progress in musical performances, while those who work for charitable organisations in spare time receive prizes for their volunteer work. By offering different rewards, schools can encourage children to focus on different subjects and choose a career path which suits their talents and interests.
