Such is a scenario of our dependency on social network: we are indulging ourselves into the live show on Instagram or Twitter, posting images concerning to our life and waiting for the likes from online friends or strangers. We also text others using smart phones or computers, but many of us are reluctant to talk or communicate in face: the drastic improvement in computing power is what made distant communication possible. However, like opening a pandora’s box, no one knows whether our human race is headed towards its own ideals or the very own demise.

Among all the disputes, the merits generated by the situation of social network replacing the face to face contact cannot keep from talking about “possibility”, the very ambiguous definition in online communication. It is said that this type of socialization has broken the natural rules concerning distance and established relations that form the barriers in real-life communication, making the living sharing become true with the viewers from other cities or even from abroad, and with those who are not related to one’s own circle at all. That is why many people have realized the fantasies in the old days of becoming friends with celebrities through the brand new online social power, or even more dramatically, of becoming celebrities by attracting tens of millions of followers. The exponential increment of the hits over the social media directly expand the fame of almost every internet user, since many of them may otherwise never have a chance of showing themselves that well in the face to face contacts.

The aforementioned details compose one scenario in which how the replacement of the face to face contact by social media would bring a new life to some people, but there is an alternative “possibility”, where the essence of “contact” would vanish among the human beings almost forever. Social intercourse is itself a relatively conflicting activity, through which people intend to get to know a real person, but meanwhile try to whitewash themselves to “deceive”: makeups and glory dressings, etc., are used to beautify every socializer. That is what made human vain, and the vanity would only be escalated once the socializing is realized virtually, with the possibility of being exposed to more viewers or likers. The online pages can be filled with the so called “real-life pictures”, behind which the posters overly decorate every food or drink, every movement or even their faces or bodies with a better lens or photo-processing software, for the purpose of proving how well they are enjoying their life, or becoming the persons others are dreaming to be. That means people would become increasingly unreal once they can freely choose which part in their life can be shown off, and what part can be perfectly hidden, and if any chance has it that they are able to only contact others through this way, no one would know what portion of the contact is true.

Like most technological developments, I suspect that the situation would be somehow more beneficial compared with its own limitations. Social media brings us convenience and possibilities, and there is nothing to worry about now seeing as an absolute pessimistic future, since the replacement has never been so overwhelming. We still have to make real-life interconnectedness with others; there is still no enough computing power for us to fulfill the complete online social life anyway. That means the reality is still what we have in our daily life and the fancy life decorated online, however, is just playing a part for us to realize our momentary escapism from the harshly real life.
