　　Humans are responsible for a variety of environmental problems and immediate measures should be taken to solve them. However, there are conflicting views on the role that individuals could play in protecting environment.

　　Those who feel it is a futile attempt for individuals to address environmental problems have their solid reasons. Emissions and exhaust fumes from factories lead to global warming, which may have a devastating effect on the planet in the future. However, this problem could only be solved by the government to introduce laws to limit emissions or to force companies to use renewable energy from solar, wind or water power. Besides, enormous areas of rainforest have been cut down to provide materials or land for industrial use, and this has led to the extinction of many species of animals and plants. But the solution to this problem also lies with the government rather than individuals.

　　However, individuals' contributions are also necessary and vital to to environment protection. They can take public transport rather than driving private cars, therefore reducing emissions. They can choose products with less packaging and use reusable bags for shopping instead for plastic bags, and in this way, they can help to reduce waste. Furthermore, if each person saves water, electricity and natural gas in daily lives, there is a huge contribution when all the seemingly little things added up. So if individuals do not try to be greener, environmental problems are difficult to solve.

　　In conclusion, my view is that individuals can make a difference in improving environment, but the government should take a leading role by enacting laws and regulations.
