  In the Information Age, people’s lives and even the whole society are influenced by the pervasiveness of commercials. As a result, the public has attached adequate emphasis on its possible economic and social outcomes.

  There is no gainsaying that advertising brings about economic growth by enhancing sales volume of certain products as well as providing work opportunities and taxation in numerous areas. It is a fact that advertising does not only disseminate information about products and services worldwide but also stimulates demand for those products. By analogy, the high sales volume of products generated by commercials substantially contributes to the advancement of the economy. Furthermore, advertising agencies also offer a great number of job opportunities and raise taxation receipts for local governments. In some cities, the advertising industry can be thought of as a pillar for local governments by bringing in revenue and elevating employment rates in certain areas.

  Nevertheless, advertisements, to some extent,still lead people to become dissatisfied with their lives, which can be regarded as a negative social impact. In the era when advertisements did not exist at all, jealousy has misled consumers to purchase products they saw their friends possessed but they did not own. Namely, social comparison is what motivates individuals to make impulsive shopping decisions rather than advertisements. Ads merely depict the kinds of products or services people need to buy, not to mention that there are a great number of factors people focus on when deciding to buy something or not. These potential threats are a genuine cause for concern of the social effects as consumers feel discontent with their identities and belongings.

  To conclude, the positive influence of advertising on economic prosperity brought about by commercials ought to be recognised. Meanwhile, potential adverse influences to the advancement of society caused by advertisements may sometimes be overestimated. In light of this, as the development of advertising is expected to be inevitable, pragmatic strategies should be implemented to alleviate negative consequences, such as protecting the interests of consumers and restricting the spread of false or misleading advertisements.
