There is no doubt that music plays a huge role in people’s lives ranging from youngsters to the elderly. Whether or not it is the universal language of humankind will be debated and delved into.

From one perspective, listening to and playing music, particularly musical instruments, don’t require knowledge of a particular language to be appreciated. Furthermore, people across the globe can enjoy the same songs, which leads to a sense of cohesion that brings citizens of all walks of life together. In addition, international musicians and stars are adored by fans in various nations, which promotes cultural understanding and appreciation without the usage of formal language. As well, music has the potential to supplement a story that can be understood by individuals speaking assorted languages.

From another point of view, a language is defined as a method of communication consisting of words that are used in a structured way. From this definition, it is debatable to state that music has always been and continues to be a universal language, particularly seeing that music in itself consists of sounds rather than intelligible speech. It is extremely difficult to effectively convey information or even one’s thoughts by using music, let alone bridge the gap between people who cannot understand the same language. Additionally, not every individual enjoys listening to the same genres or even music at all, meaning that it cannot be universal if it leaves certain people out.

In my eyes, although music can unite a multitude of diverse groups of people and transcend borders with its ability to promote unity, it is certainly not a universal language as it definitely cannot be defined as a language as well as the fact that it leaves numerous people out of the conversation.
