In this day and age, almost everyone uses plastic bottles, bags, food wrappers and containers for a variety of purposes in their daily lives. Nevertheless, this extensive usage of plastic has led to a broad array of issues, which will be further discussed, alongside possible solutions for these challenges.
One of the most prominent challenges related to plastic waste is the detrimental effect it has on animals. Millions of seabirds, turtles and aquatic animals including fish and dolphins have traces of plastic in their bodies, not to mention they are unable to survive in such horrid conditions. Moreover, there is an enormous trash problem faced by nations all over the world as landfills are filling up with plastics, which is dangerous as these materials take hundreds of years to fully decompose. Furthermore, there is a link between adverse health issues such as cancers, birth defects and developmental difficulties from the exposure or consumption of plastics.
In order to prevent these terrible effects on humanity and mother nature, individuals can boycott the usage of plastics in their everyday lives from restaurants, grocery stores or even common household products. By refusing to purchase these plastic-based items, people can send a message to businesses and organisations that they will not stand plastic inundating society anymore. From the perspective of government, nations can introduce legislation to reduce the amount of plastic bags, straws, containers and products that companies make by taxing these items or banning their usage altogether. Additionally, government can also reduce its own usage of plastics throughout its agencies as well as penalise heavy plastic manufacturers.
Overall, global cities are filled with plastic items, the countryside is inundated with plastic landfills and aquatic animals in the world’s oceans are dying out and even becoming extinct from ingesting plastic. Extraordinary measures need to be taken by individuals, enterprises and government in order to pursue a healthier future.
