Learning a language is a difficult venture that takes learners years to master. There are various aspects that need to be practiced, including listening, reading, speaking and writing, which are all essential, however, not of equal importance.
The purpose that an individual learns a language dictates which skill is most essential for their personal usage. With respect to students, their primary aim is likely to perform well on exams, which tends to be heavily weighted towards writing and reading, especially in certain education systems. In the corporate world, perhaps speaking and listening are more crucial as business deals and partnerships are constructed based on communication between parties. The same holds true for interpreters and simultaneous translators who are required to instantaneously listen and speak in order to achieve understanding between groups of individuals.
On the contrary, in order to achieve a high level of fluency, the acquisition of the four language skills is pivotal. In most education systems around the globe, an equal emphasis is placed on these skills, which portrays their importance in obtaining high scores in school subjects and in language proficiency. Furthermore, certain jobs require an ability to listen, speak, read and write such as lawyers and doctors, particularly if their clients or patients speak a foreign language or if they conduct business in a multilingual nation or region.
All in all, it is essential to have a basic level of fluency in each skill, however, depending on one’s purpose, not all the skills are equally crucial to master. For certain individuals, writing and reading may take precedence over speaking or listening and vice versa.
