Many have questioned whether it is possible to determine a link between genetics and criminal behavior. In my opinion, despite strong resistance in many quarters, there is little doubt that genes play a part in antisocial behavior and we can effectively intervene before antisocial behavior escalates into crime.
It is true that genetic disorders and mental illness have provided explanations for a small minority of offenders with specific conditions. Many genes may affect brain functioning in ways that either increases or reduce the chances individuals learning various complex behavior patterns. Some genes are turned on because of physical, social factors; and some genes that influence directly difficult temperament, impulsivity, novelty seeking, and lack of empathy predispose people to be exposed to environmental risks and make it hard for people to express emotions in what would be considered a positive manner, leading people to engage in anti-social behaviors like enjoy getting lost or doing something crazy just for fun.
Such as it is, as there was general agreement that everyone’s behavior is influenced to varying degrees by both genetic and environmental factors, we can divert children from deviant behaviors through fostering positive environment. It has been proven that behavior is molded based on a set of morals, values and beliefs that are instilled in individuals during early childhood, which facilitates decision making throughout the course of an individuals’ life. Therefore, intervening early in one’s life such as providing instructions and guidance on anger management and emotion language or reinforcing helpful behavior both at school and home will definitely diminish the likelihood of embarking on or persisting in a criminal career.
In fact, it is the combination of both biological and social factors mold people into who they are. Genes only partially dictate the mindset of one that chooses to engage in criminal behavior. Under this conception, viable and effective ways will always be available to prevent children from turning into criminals.
