I would argue in this essay how irrational the claim that news is not connected to people’s lives is and how ridiculous the logic is made by the topic.
Before scrutinizing whether news reported through the mass media has connection to our lives, we must first consider what “connection” is. There is definitely a universal definition of what “connection” means, and usually it means the “relationship, the closeness or the joint between things and people”. It is thus understandable for many to consider what the coverage has told seems far away from our regular life, because once an event can be defined as “news”, it is at least unique enough to be either related to, say, the conflicts or cooperation between communities, or to the novelties that deserve a focus. That may, superficially, not allow some to see past the direct correlation that this type of coverage may have to our daily lives and rob them of the opportunity to recognize the potential that lies, but one must know that the long-term reflection of those things given to us are what lays the foundation of all the reasonings that follows, and ultimately make subtle changes among the overwhelming people. who is to say that news like the macro-economic activities that are organized nationwide, like industrial transformation, or import or export increases, which may seem unrelated at first, did not comprise the very fabric of our daily consumption finally? And that we humans, as naturally inquisitive and rational beings, did not build our insights, living knowledge, or alarms based on the emergences that are printed on newspapers? The short-sighted consideration on the connections between news and common life distracts us from thinking deeply and more rationally about what is the real system of ourselves and the world.
The fault premise, then seems directly leading to the unpersuasive property of the belief claiming that the news receiving via public media is to no avail, but the truth may somehow overstep this recognition. Before establishing a causality, one must first deeply consider whether the reasons are necessarily correlated to their possible outcomes. However, the conclusion with regard to whether it is a waste of learning news from the mass media is not directly related to whether the news per se is or is not connected to our lives, but to how we build up our understanding to our surroundings and to the current situations of the world; that means, ergo, any proposal of information gaining through any channel should not be deemed “waste” if it truly builds up our knowledge and insights that are valued by ourselves on the basis of not influencing our major daily businesses. It is then clear that the definition of “waste of time” is highly subjective, even though certain myopic thinking holds the quantification of this as what immediate benefits an activity may generate. Just what type of action is considered a “waste”, and what type of return can be judged “immediate return”? for many daily habits that are commonly thought valuable and certainly, not a waste, like physical exercises or eating nutrient balanced diets, it is still quite challenging to discern how immediately the benefits are manifested, since it is extremely hard for anyone to objectively measure it from observing the presence or absence of values.
In conclusion, I would very much disagree that news is rather connective to our daily life, and that the habit of reading or watching news reports is totally valuable and is out of the correlation to how close such information is to our lives.
