It is argued that more urban land should be distributed to vegetation than houses in towns and cities. I, personally, hold the view that a balance between the greenery and houses should be kept for the city planning.
The merits of preserving more urban areas for greenery can be manifold. First and foremost, the green belt plays a crucial role in ensuring consistent supply of fresh air to all the urban inhabitants. Via the photosynthesis, most green leafy plants help convert the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere into fresh oxygen that the life of human and many other fauna relies on. Without sufficient plants grown in cities, hardly can the healthy provision of oxygen be guaranteed, let alone trees’ other eco-friendly effects to the city, including filtering some detrimental gases or vehicle emission in the air, and adjusting the urban temperature and humidity, to name just a few. Moreover, the scale of green area is now considered as a critical standard to measure a city’s life quality and progress made in its civilisation. The easy access to nature encourages citizens to organise more outdoor activities which not only can improve the physical well-being, but enhance the family bond as well.
On the other hand, there is no denying fact that the accommodation of continuously growing urban population is still the priority to most city councils globally. The housing issue can be the basic needs for the city dwellers, which directly determines the life quality and happiness index. In the light of this, it is conceivable that some city-planners chose to construct more high-rise blocks of flats with the sacrifice of some urban green. For them, how to meet their citizens’ basic physiological and safety needs, particularly securing a shelter, is unquestionably more straightforward and realistic.
In conclusion, giving too much place of urban housing to vegetation or vice versa is an extreme measure. From my own perspective, an equilibrium between these two demands should be laid more emphasis on by the city-planners.
