Nowadays, children, teenagers and even adults alike are obsessed with social networking apps, which have oftentimes replaced face-to-face communication. Although this trend has been frowned upon by the older generation, it would an oversimplification to say that its disadvantages outweigh the advantages, or vice versa.
The benefits that Facebook, Twitter, Wechat and Weibo have brought us are obvious. They give us a novel channel to get our news and information, and meanwhile everyone can voice their opinions and become a content provider. In the past, people’s access to information was limited. Although they themselves might not have realized this, compared to the resources we have at our disposal today, they were living in the “stone age”. Back then they got their news from several newspapers and TV channels, platforms where only well-known economists, politicians and editors-in-chief could make their voices heard. Yet today with social media booming, everyone can put their opinions up there for others to read. Everyone, no matter how fringe their views are or how weird their idiosyncrasies are, can find some like-minded buddies and have a community. In a sense, Facebook and Twitter bring people together.
But the disadvantage of this is that pedophiles, perverts, religious extremists, and racists, whose behavior and views are not socially acceptable and have to conceal their agenda behind a facade in real life, also find a platform to share their true opinions under the disguise of anonymity. Suddenly they find a lot of people around the world sharing their bias, racism or perversion. This new-found sense of acceptance and community makes their evil minds and perverted behavior seem less evil and perverted. Let me give you an example: say, you fucked a pig or a sow to be exact. 30 years ago you would have been ostracized by any community and shunned by everyone, and you would have felt ashamed for the rest of your life; but today if you go online, you may find a large online pig-fucking community. This new-found identity and sense of community normalizes things, making even the most socially unacceptable seem normal, and the consequence is that people do not feel ashamed of their behavior and carry on with pig-fucking, pedophilia, necrophilia, or whatever -philia they are into.
in face to face communication, we face one another and don’t have the luxury of anonymity. Interaction via facebook and twitter does bring some benefits. Do its benefits outweigh its drawbacks? most people may answer in the affirmative. but if you have a peek at what kind of low lives, predators and perverts are lurking there, looking for their next prey, you may have second thoughts.
