Nowadays a large amount of advertising aiming at children should be banned because of the negative effects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

To assess whether the children-oriented advertisements should be banned or not owing to the negative effects generated, I would first argue that the blights of one thing are not the necessary reason of the its prohibition; a well-rounded analysis would be made in this essay about how unreasonable the claim is.

I have to admit that negative effects to both children and parents do exist when there is too much drumbeating aiming at children; great shopping desires aroused by such visual information would put their parents into parenting dilemma. By using elements—animations, cartoons, lovely vocals, etc.—that easily draw children’s attention and by realizing the promoting functions, advertisements seem far more than attractive to their “target customers”; those kids would extremely obsess with the commodities propagandized and require their parents to pay for them. Usually it is understandable for the kids to form a reasonable amount of natural desire, but the over-injection of the advertising, together with the relatively immature psychology may directly increase the willingness and practically transform it into great pressures on parents, since the accumulated great desires may not only awe them on the daily spending, but provokes the conflicting concerns: to fulfil their kids‘ shopping demands may easily let them feel that they can always be satisfied if they want to, or otherwise, they would feel depressed and the sense of failure when facing mostly rejections.

However, the claim made by the topic is clearly myopic, since the thinking fails to balance the necessity of this type of propaganda and the flaws it may have simultaneously. The policy of prohibition only works if the disadvantages of the advertising outweigh the contributions. That means, while considering the possible adverse influences, one should never neglect the greatness of this type of commercial promotion—it seems to be the most effective, or sometimes the only way for certain commodities to be known by the public, and to struggle with their life in the fierce market. Without the mass media to build up the bridge between merchandise and the consumers, producers and distributors may be pushed into a harsh place where their product advantages can never be known by many people. Chances are that the vicious circle then forms: once the producers witness the trade deficit of their commodities, they would largely turn about and search for a new way that is not so restricted in commercial promotion; the children product market may sooner or later experience the slump. Calamities, therefore, overwhelm the situation obviously compared with the aforementioned negative effects if those commercials are forbidden over the media.

In conclusion, however disadvantageous the advertising aiming at children is, the banning policy should be the last thing to be considered and should be meticulously testified in terms of the potential outcomes.
