　　The topic of scientific research remains a hot-topic issue in society nowadays,

　　particularly due to the continuing situation of a global pandemic. Whether or not it ought to be carried out by governments or private enterprises will be discussed.

　　If scientific research is conducted by government, there would be fewer special interests, whereas the concerns of government tend to align with assisting as many residents as possible who are suffering from illness. For scientific research by government to be most effective, it must involve a major issue that affects a large number of individuals rather than less important problems.

　　Moreover, government directives tend to involve a greater number of decision-makers, either elected or representing the people, who are capable of making choices for the wider population, rather than a handful of board of directors in an enterprise who aim to focus on the sole interests of the company.

　　On the contrary, enterprises, particularly if they are public, have a responsibility to their shareholders and the ultimate goal is likely to maximise profit for the company. Along these lines, the priority for companies may not be towards relieving pain and suffering of the deadliest diseases and pathogens, rather to earn the largest amount of revenue possible. Nevertheless, private companies tend to attract the brightest minds in the scientific field due to the fact that they have a tendency to offer higher salaries than government-owned institutions. This may lead to solving complex and intricate problems faster and more effectively than in a bureaucratic government agency that requires heaps of time to get approval for decisions.

　　All in all, I believe both government and private companies ought to work together in order to maximise the benefit for society and not merely focus on profits when it comes to scientific research that could save countless lives.
