Scientific researches indicate that walking, as a basic form of exercise, benefits people agreat deal whereas few can achieve the required number of steps in their everyday lives. This phenomenon is basically due to transportation and recreational reasons and theindividuals and government are both obliged to change this unhealthy situation.
The primary cause for less walkers is due to the technological breakthroughs. Thesedevelopments of vehicles like subway and private cars allow city dwellers to commute forlonger distances than ever, enabling them to live and work in far-off locations. However, itnaturally excludes the option of commuting on foot as the mileage has already becomebeyond footage. What is more, thanks to the smartphone, the Internet and excellentcomputer games, screening time has occupied much greater amounts of leisure time, whichdramatically reduced the time for outdoor activities for normal residents. Compared withthe pastime after dinner in the past which was normally to take a walk with the family in mycountry, most family members these days usually intoxicate themselves in digital worldsimmediately after household duties.
Mainly for the well-being of citizens, two suggestions can be adopted either by individualfamily or by government. The more efficient but relatively ideal solution to this worryingissue is to live near the school or workplace. Whenever the rent or the mortgage isaffordable, the family should prefer the accommodation resulting in shorter daily routeswhich save time and promote the possibility of walking, or at least cycling. In the meantime, government should restrict the screen time for adolescents, publicize the idea of morewalking like introducing pedometer and ranking in social apps, as well as exploit moreattractions suitable for hiking and excursion.
To conclude, even though the convenient and fantastic tools have removed the option ofsufficient daily walking and produced less pedestrians in urban streets, it is still a favourablechoice for normal persons to walk more and the authorities should endeavour to facilitatethe progress.
