【参考范文】Opinions are divided on what the responsibility of drug companies is. Some believe that pharmaceutical corporates should bear social responsibility and explore medicine to help less developed nations, while according to others, profitability should be the priority of drug companies. From my perspective, I agree with the former group.
The same as all the industries, making profits is the main task, and the drug companies is no exception. Only when the company is profitable can it survive in a fierce market competition and then develop prosperously. This theory also applies to the case of a drug company. Developing and inventing new medicine requires considerable investment in a series of things, ranging from sophisticated equipment and rare raw materials to high-level personnel and drug tests. Without sufficient financial support which for a company often means profits, it is out of the question to research new medicines to benefit the public.
Opponents, on the other hand, argue that drug companies ought to play a role in helping poorer countries, because this act can set up a good image of the company and bring greater profits in the long run. By selling medicines to patients throughout the world, these pharmaceutical companies save millions of lives and also gain huge profits, because when facing diseases, people have to buy these medicines, no matter how expensive they may be, otherwise their life would end. In such a situation, as a life-saving industry, large drug companies are financially capable to help people in poorer countries whose life are in danger. Although company’s income may be lowered in a short period, a larger section of the world would appreciate this behaviour and regard the company as a socially responsible one.
