Alek
01、Peter
ALEK: I actually prefer Alek, it’s a long story and probably notfor today.
ALEK: That’s not a problem, I’d be delighted to share.
ALEK: I’ve always been passionate about learning, not only formyself but for others too.
ALEK: I strongly believe that education brings this world closertogether. I used to want to solve problems, I always did… I justlacked the guidance and experience to do so. I seek to bring that toothers so one day they might stand on my humble shoulders.
ALEK: Sorry to be vague. I mean, I always wanted to fix the world butwas never in a position to do that. I eventually discovered that oneperson can’t change the world, we can only affect our little cornerof the world. That’s what I’m trying to do this through teaching.I hope to impart some of my experience and knowledge to these youngpeople so that they might make a positive contribution to the future.I know we live in a world of standardised tests and scores, but thereare some who are yet to realise their true potential. I hope to bringthe best out in them by being their friend and confident. I havegreat student teacher relationships with my students and theirfamilies.
ALEK: There is a Ancient Greek proverb that says: “It is a wise manwho plants a tree, under which he will never enjoy the shade.” –Things happen slowly and gradually. Nobody learns to play pianoovernight, as teachers we must be patient and learn to instil thatpatience in our students. Help them realise, that in this modernworld of quick gratification is a passing fancy, that being patienthas great rewards and with it comes the wisdom to use the knowledgethat we learn.
ALEK: Enough for a few lifetimes to be honest, but I’m more thanhappy to diligently pass on what I know. I see teaching as a gift. For instance, when I first started teaching, in my twenties, I wassent to a special educational needs school. None of the teachersthere had lasted more than a week because of the behaviour of thestudents. I worked hard to try and get through to these young peopleand with most of them the plan was a success. I’m very proud of theboys and girls that I taught back then, many of them have stablefamilies and children of their own now.
ALEK: Actually, not! I was invited to teach The King’s SpecialTalent Programme in Thailand after I was “spotted” by Mr. Pondwho was actually in the village seeking potential students. I endedup teaching high ability classes to students between the ages offourteen and eighteen. They were great kids; I remember when I had atraffic accident just outside the school. My class came down andcarried me to the quiet garden within the school grounds. I insistedthat we still have class and after some debate with them I got myway, in spite of their concerns. The first, and I hope last, lesson Iever did with one of my students mopping blood from my leg. Ha-ha!Besides, I could not let my boys and girls down, we were halfwaythrough a unit. I still stay in touch with some of those students tothis day. They are doing well.
ALEK: I guess you can say that I’ve taught students of allabilities with wide-ranging problems, or none at all. It’swonderful for me to experience this snapshot of life as it passes meby.
ALEK: You might be right, but as my grandfather taught me – you’venot lost until you stop standing up strong. I guess I’m still here.
ALEK: Of course! Is there another way to live your life? If there issomething easier, please tell me about it! Ha-ha!
ALEK: Seriously though, I believe that a person is only beaten whenthey don’t stand up anymore. I encourage this positive attitude inmy students too. I say to them that they can choose the moment thatthey are beaten and then I teach the word “NEVER!”
ALEK: Ha-ha, it’s interesting being an English teacher, you have toexplore so many topics with your class, it’s very involved. I haveto share myself with them and they with me.
ALEK: Yes. Very. I find that each student responds in their own way.I don’t succeed with every student but I always do my best to findthat “key” that fits their “lock” to unleash their potential.
ALEK: You’re very welcome.
